Mia Moss & Katherine Morris: Owners of Black Coffee & Cherry Coffee

In this episode, Jamey and Melissa Ice dive into a dynamic conversation with two of the Fort Worth coffee scene’s favorites: Mia Moss, owner of Black Coffee, and Katherine Morris, owner of both Cherry Coffee Shop and Novel Coffee Roasters.

This group goes beyond just sharing Mia and Katherine’s individual journeys to entrepreneurship. They unpack how their friendship with each other and other female Fort Worth coffee shop owners (they call themselves the “Coffee-a Mafia”) has been a game changer for their businesses. Mia and Katherine also share what they consider to be some of the most important factors to embrace while running a coffee shop.

You’ll end the episode in awe of their simultaneous tenacity and humility (and probably a little motivated to start a coffee business of your own!)

Years into her career in education, Mia Moss wanted to do something different - open a coffee shop in her coffee desert of a Fort Worth neighborhood - Meadowbrook. After attending the American Barista & Coffee School in Portland Oregon, she founded and opened Black Coffee

Now, Black Coffee is one of Fort Worth’s most beloved coffee shops. It’s a community hub and haven for creatives where coffee bridges gaps and builds relationships.

Katherine Morris knew she was gifted with numbers when she joined the stock market club in 6th Grade at Argyle Middle School. She graduated from TCU with a degree in finance and a dream of running a corporate foundation. After jumping into the finance world, Katherine realized she valued collaboration over competition, and she shifted gears.

After years in the nonprofit sector, Katherine joined Craftwork Coffee Group as the Director of Finance and HR. Eventually, she became Craftwork’s Director of Operations, and in 2021, when the opportunity arose, she took over ownership of Craftwork on Magnolia, transforming it into Cherry Coffee Shop. Cherry Coffee shop is now a neighborhood staple where kindness, comfort, and hospitality rule.

After realizing North Texas was seriously lacking in female-owned coffee roasting operations, Katherine acquired Novel Coffee Roasters, a growing coffee roasting company that is distributed to 44 different states. She is now tackling the challenge of building out Cherry’s coffee roasting business - go Katherine go!

Together, these women are continually lifting up their communities. Don’t miss the chance to hear their wisdom about leadership, the benefit of hiring well and trusting your team, the importance of rest, and the necessity of knowing your numbers in small business.
