Episode 02: MELT Ice Creams with Kari Crowe Seher

On episode #2 of Stories with Soul, Jamey and Jimmy sit down with their neighbor, Kari Crowe Sehr, the founder of MELT Ice Creams and an experienced ultrarunner. She shares how traveling with her husband, Mark, helped her realize Fort Worth was missing good local ice cream. As part of her research before launching, Kari drove solo through the South interviewing other ice cream shop owners and then shadowed Jesse of Mason’s Creamery in Cleveland, Ohio.

To fund her initial shop, Kari “burned the ships,” selling her professional photography equipment, and then 2 years later went all in again when Mark quit his job to help Melt move to a better location. Kari shares how they grew from one shop to 3 with a 4th on the way, why they said yes to Whole Foods, and how she plans to invest in her high school employees. Kari also shared the strategies that helped Melt survive when Covid-19 first arrived in DFW, like the Happiness for Heroes program.

Jimmy and Jamey asked Kari about her love for ultrarunning — she was introduced to the sport by another Near Southside neighbor. It’s become a huge part of her life and a way for her to give back to the community, including as an ambassador for Free to Run. Listen to the end to get her advice for entrepreneurs!
